ENGLISH GIANTS TAKE PART IN DISCOVERY CUP

20th April 2005

Two of English football's biggest clubs will make the trip to Dundee this summer to take part in the inaugural City of Discovery Cup tournament.

Former Dundee United legend Paul Sturrock will make an emotional return to the city with Sheffield Wednesday and former England manager Glenn Hoddle will bring his Wolves squad featuring Scotland stars Kenny Miller and Colin Cameron.

The organisers today confirmed the participation of both clubs in the tournament which is being jointly hosted by Dundee and Dundee United and supported by the City of Discovery Campaign.

The participation of one of England's leading clubs, currently sitting mid table in the Coca-Cola Championship, and one of its best supported, challenging for promotion from Coca-Cola Championship 1, is a major boost to the inaugural trophy.

The cup will be held on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 at Dens Park and Tannadice and will take on a knockout format with two semi-finals on the Saturday and a final and third-placed play off taking place on the Sunday.

Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson welcomed the announcement. He said, "Paul Sturrock remains a hugely popular figure with United fans and his team's participation is sure to generate considerable interest. Both teams are sure to bring a large support and I know they will find a warm welcome in Dundee."

Lord Provost John Letford, chairman of the City of Discovery Campaign, said, "We are delighted to have two famous English clubs in Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday taking part in the tournament. I'm sure that will be a very attractive prospect for fans in the city and I look forward to welcoming many visiting fans here as well. It should make for a great weekend all round in Dundee."

A new City of Discovery trophy will be commissioned for the cup and the clubs will make approaches to commercial sponsors to become involved in supporting the tournament which has been welcomed by the supporters' trusts and associations of both clubs.

A gala weekend of entertainment for fans and the general public, including football workshops for youngsters, celebrities and "old boy's" matches between cup games and music afterwards, will be arranged to coincide with the tournament and the start of the annual trades' holiday fortnight.

The organisers are planning a formal launch of the new tournament next month.
