The side lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Colgan in goal behind a back three of Abbot, Dodds and Gardiner. Callaghan played wide right with Easton wide left whilst Cameron and Burnett took the centre midfield spots, Andreoni played the linking role with strikers Robertson and Grady up front.
Kilmarnock were much the better team in the first half and should have gone in more than 1-0 ahead against a United side unable to find any rhythm to their play. Killie lived to rue their lack of a killer touch as United came out a team transformed after the interval.
There was one slight change to the line-up with Andreoni going off to allow Robertson back into the linking position whilst McDonald took over up front. This alteration alone however does not account for the vast improvement in the second half and it was no surprise when a good move ended with Easton firing home the equaliser. The second and winning goal came as United were pressing the home side back. McDonald did well to win the ball and he fed Grady who netted the winner.
After the match Dave Bowman said, "We were pretty poor in the first half and Killie dominated for much of it. I don't think we had a single chance before the half time whistle and we were lucky to go in just one down. After the break though, our play was much better and we were the dominant side. We really pressed the game and I have to give the players full credit. They did exactly as we asked of them in the second half and the result was a deserved win in my opinion."
