DERBY DEFEAT FOR YOUTHS

6th May 2005

United lined up for this last derby of the season with McLean in goal behind a back three of Abbot, Gardiner and O'Byrne. In midfield it was Callaghan, Burnett, Andreoni, Easton and McAleenan with Robertson and McDonald up font.

United started well and Callaghan had a dangerous looking free kick palmed away by Murray and then the Dundee keeper parried a Gardiner free kick. It took Dundee full fifteen minutes to make any impression with a Reily snap shot but McLean easily held it and McLaughlin fired over. On twenty minutes, Burnett came close after good work by McDonald and eight minutes later United took a deserved lead. Robertson ran on to a flick over the defence from McDonald before beating two defenders and the keeper to score form the edge of the area.

Five minutes later McDonald had a chance himself but the effort was cleared and then a great free kick whipped in by Callaghan was flicked goal-wards by Robertson but he only managed to skim the bar. O'Byrne was then unlucky with a header before Reilly missed a great chance to level for Dundee. Just before half time Burnett fired in another effort that was deflected just wide.

After the break, Dundee had the first effort on gaol when McLean saved well from McLaughlin. United had dominated the first half but now flowed more from end to end. McLaughlin had an effort held by McLean and then Easton had his shot saved by Murray. McAleenan was finding a lot of space on the left but twice from a good position his cross was blocked. Reilly tried to take on the whole United defence but was eventually crowded out.

With seventy minutes played Dundee were awarded a penalty after the referee spotted some pushing in the box and Voight fired into the corner. Deasley had an effort parried by McLean and at the other end Feeney set up Robertson for a snap shot that was saved. With eight minutes left Dundee went ahead when Deasley latched on to a ball into the six yard box to slot home. In the final minute Gardiner just failed to connect with a Callaghan corner kick.
