UNITED YOUTHS FAIL TO DEFEND TROPHY

18th July 2005

The Dundee United Youth side were unable to defend the Keyline Challenge Cup that they had won in 2004. The tournament was a six-team event played on a league basis and the 2005 version featured holders United, hosts Oban Saints, Hearts, St Johnstone, Hamilton Accies and Dumbarton.

United collected only one point and failed to score in their first three matches drawing 0-0 with SPL Hearts, losing 0-1 to Hamilton and 0-3 to Dumbarton. The fourth match against Tayside neighbours looked to heading for a similar reversal when the Perth Saints led 0-2 at the interval, however, goals from Goodwillie and Easton pulled the young Tangerines level but they could not find a winner and drew 2-2.

The final match against hosts Oban Saints resulted in United's first win when a first half goal from Feeney proved to be the solitary goal of the match.

Dumbarton went on to lift the trophy.
