There may not have been any goals at Station Park, but this was a decent enough result against an Inverness side with far greater experience.
Biggest plus though was Lee Mair coming through his first full ninety minutes in just over a year unscathed and proving himself ready for first team action.
In fact, the experienced defender strolled through proceedings during which defences were on top virtually throughout.
Tony Docherty's side lined up as usual in a 4-4-2 formation: in defence Abbot, Kenneth, Mair, Gardiner - a midfield of Burnett, Robertson, Cameron, Easton - and Feeney and Goodwillie up front.
Starting the better side, United were on top for the opening twenty five minutes and carved out what was probably the best move of the game which came midway through the half.
Robbie Feeney and David Goodwillie combined to set up David Robertson and keeper Michael Fraser was at full stretch to save his shot from the edge of the box.
The visitors then came back into it with the trialist at number ten sending Alan Morgan through but his effort went wide of the far post.
Just before the break there was another chance for United, Fraser dropping the ball at the feet of Lee Mair, but the defender didn't get enough purchase on his shot which was cleared.
An evenly contested second period produced chances in even quantity for both sides, but right at the death Graham Bayne missed a glorious chance to sneak all three points for the visitors.
Unmarked and just eight yards out, the former Dundee striker directed his header from Alan Morgan's cross a foot wide of the near post when it seemed easier to score.
