Tannadice Park, home of Dundee United, is the latest sports stadium set to comply fully with the Scottish Executive's Smoking, Health & Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005. The new legislation comes into effect on 26 March and by then Tannadice will be a totally smoke free environment.
The new legislation bans smoking in enclosed public spaces, which will make smoking illegal in all of the Club's hospitality suites, offices and concourses. The legislation also includes the outdoor seated areas at many sports grounds and stadia, depending on building and construction specifications and various other technical factors. Prior to the legislation, many grounds had already implemented a full or partial smoking ban for safety reasons.
Taking all of these factors and related issues into account, the Club has decided that a total ban on smoking is the only effective and practical way to meet the new legislation.
A Club spokesman said, "The new Act is regarded as a vital piece of public health legislation and we clearly want to ensure that our supporters benefit from it. We have gone to considerable lengths to ensure that we not only comply with the legislation but also are able to police it and implement it effectively. A total ban is thought to be the only effective way to ensure this. We apologise to any of our fans who may have a different view on this subject, but believe as a sporting organisation that we should show a lead to others in this area.
"We can confirm that we have consulted at length with various supporters' representatives and their feedback has been invaluable in assisting us reach this decision. It is good to know that the majority of our fans will welcome Tannadice being a smoke free environment."
