United's very young Tannadice second string lost narrowly at Easter Road last night with the home side's little bit of extra experience counting in the end.
Just how young a United side this was can be gleaned by the fact that only three of the Tangerines' starting eleven no longer qualify for the youth team, and just two have any first team experience.
Making matters worse, one of those, midfielder Greg Cameron, was carried off with a head cut that required seven stitches five minutes after the start.
So stretched were United resources, the man who replaced him, Keith Watson, is still at school, but he acquitted himself very well.
Despite those additional disadvantages, there was still very little between the two sides.
The goal that earned Hibs victory came after 25 minutes when Ross Cameron headed in a cross from the left.
The closest United came to equalising was right on the stroke of half-time when claims that defender Michael O'Byrne's header had crossed the line before the ball was cleared were waved away.
Throughout the game there were few chances, but David Goodwillie shot narrowly past with twenty minutes left.
