NEW-LOOK’ HEANEY IMPRESSES SMITH

14th November 2000

Boss Alex Smith is known to be on the lookout for a creative winger - and he reckons he may have found one - at Tannadice!! 'New-look' Neil Heaney has hardly featured in the first team this season, but rather than linger on the sidelines, the former Manchester City and Arsenal man has been undergoing an extensive training schedule to step up his sharpness. Manager Smith was very impressed with Heaney's showing in Monday's Under-21 fixture against Dundee and Paul Sturrock's £150,000 signing from Darlington may now be ready to show what he is really capable of in the first team. Smith said,"Neil looked good in the Under-21 game. When I came to Tannadice I felt he was not as fit as he should be both mentally and physically. " I have put him through what we call real conditional training - an intense programme to sharpen him up. " He seems to be benefiting which is important as I need his type in the first team." The Manager was also delighted to see recently-acquired pair Jim Lauchlan and Jamie Fullarton turn out for an hour in that game. Lauchlan is now free from suspension while Fullarton is getting fitter and both will be in the squad heading for Perth on Saturday.
