UNITED WIN OBAN TOURNAMENT

10th July 2010

In United's first match of the day, a second half goal by Andis Shala, from a Ryan Dow corner, secured a 1-0 win over Alloa Athletic.

A brace from a lively Fran Sandaza saw United defeat St Johnstone 2-0 in their second match of the day. In the first half, good work by Scott Allan set up the Spanish striker for his first goal. In the second period, a slick move involving Cadamarteri, Sandaza and Gomis was finished off by Sandaza himself.

In the third match, United were held to a goalless draw by Hearts after Prince Buaben was denied by a stunning save by the keeper towards the end of the game.

Two penalties, scored by Jon Daly and Damian Casalinouvo, gave United a 2-1 win over hosts Oban Saints. Oban Saints late consolation goal came from a terrific free kick.

In the final match of the day, United drew 0-0 with Hamilton, thereby winning the tournament on goal difference.

First team coach Gary Kirk said, "It's always nice to win, especially for all the fans who made the long journey up here, but the main purpose was to give everyone game time and in that sense it was once again a really worthwhile exercise. It was good to see both Fran Sandaza and Scott Robertson, in particular, on the park for so long and coming through unscathed."
