The Livi side contained several facesfamiliar to United fans. Tony Bullock was in goal with former Tannadice youth team defender Michael O'Byrne in the starting line up, while striker Aaron Conway was on the bench.
There was an early blow for United with Sandaza being forced to go off after landing awkawardly, to be replaced by Ryan Dow after just nine minutes.
Eight minutes later United went close to breaking the deadlock on 17 minutes when Bullock's clearance was charged down by Scott Allan and the ball broke to Casalinuovo who appeared to be hauled back by Joe Hamill but no penalty was forthcoming.
However from then on until the interval it was a lively Livi side who were in control, creating several openings.
But it was United who went in ahead at the break against the run of play with two minutes of the first half left. Jenno Myrie-Williams fired in a free-kick which Bullock spilled and Casalinuovo tucked away the loose ball from close range.
At the interval Filipe Mentel replaced Stevie Banks in goal. Outfield there were two changes, both tialists going off with youngsters Michael Lee and Stuart Armstrong taking over in central midfiled.
Play followed very much the same pattern of the first half with Mentel immediately being brought into play being forced into a save low to his right.
But United's luck ran out 16 minutes into the second half when Mentel brought down Mark McNulty and the striker got up to send the Slovakian keeper the wrong way from the resultant spot kick
Although Livi had the lions' share of possession, with eleven minutes left, Myrie-Williams conjured up a tremendous individual goal to again go ahead against the run of play.
Picking the ball up 15 minuutes inside the home side's half be went on a run outstripping two defenders before clipping the ball over the advancing keeper.
Four minutes later, Livi's sub keeper Craig McDowell had to tip over Darren Dods header from a corner.
But within a minute justice was done when Chris Malone drilled a low shot past Mentel for a deserved leveller.
In an end to end finish, David Sinclair saved the home side's bacon, having to fully stretch to head a Shala header off the line.
But an entertaining encounter finished 2-2 .
