UNITED X1 WIN 3-0 AT COVE

11th August 2010

Cove Rangers 0 Dundee United X1 3

Johnny Russell celebrated his return to action in style at Allan Park last night. Playing his first game since last season, he scored twice in the youthful Tannadice side's comfortable win over their Highland League hosts. Indeed, apart from Russell, Ryan Dow and Craig Hill were the only players no longer eligible for the Tangerines' Under-19 side.

Russell's opener was a superbly struck chip from 16-yards from Lewis Swanson's through ball. That opener was richly deserved, the visitors having carved out but missed three great chances.Only five minutes had gone when Stuart Armstrong curled one off the inside of the post.Six minutes later, Ross Smith headed a corner wide and Smith also side-footed past a cut back from comeback star Russell.
United's undoubted superiority told further with five minutes of the first half left when Russell met a Michael Lee cross to bury a right-foot volley into the bottom corner from six -yards.

Second half was a much more even affair, it was United who continued to create the chances and in the very last minutes Jordan Elfverson, who'd only minutes earlier been denied by Pirie, ran on to a through ball and slipped it under the advancing keeper.
