UNITED 3 - 1 ABERDEEN

11th September 2010

United comfortably defeated Aberdeen this afternoon with a 3-1 victory at Tannadice with all four goals coming in the first half.

Dusan Pernis kept the scoreline blank after just a minute when he blocked well with his legs from Maguire's shot.

The first goal came in the third minute, starting from an Aberdeen attack. Megginson's shot was blocked by Dillon on the edge of the area, with the ball breaking to David Goodwillie on the edge of the centre circle.

He found Conway on the left hand side, and following passes to Gomis and then back to Goodwillie in the area, the ball broke to Jon Daly six yards out, with the captain sending the ball into the bottom corner.

The home fans were lifted, and so were the players as Goodwillie tried an audacious lob from the edge of the penalty area, which Aberdeen goalkeeper Mark Howard turned over the crossbar.

Howard had a nightmare from Conway's resultant corner, however, when he punched the ball into the net with only Jerel Ifil around him. Aberdeen claimed an infringement in the box, and Mark McGhee was given a final warning from referee Mike Tumilty for his protestations.

An unbelievable opening to the game continued in the eighth minute. Conway was fouled by McArdle on the left flank, and the alert Barry Douglas took a quick free kick to Conway who ran into the area and into a challenge with Paul Hartley.

Hartley appeared to have got some of the ball in the challenge, but the referee pointed to the spot and David Goodwillie despatched the spot kick.

Aberdeen pulled one back on twenty six minutes, when an Ifil ball forward was flicked into the path of Vernon in the box, who turned and fired an unstoppable effort beyond Pernis into the net.

Mark McGhee was sent to the stand towards the end of the first half for kicking the ball across the pitch from his technical area, but despite having pulled one back, his side couldn't find a way back into the game in the second half, with United looking resilient and dangerous on the break.

David Goodwillie almost put the finishing touches on the performance in the closing minutes, but his shot clipped the outside of the post.
