First Team

United 3 Dunfermline 1

22nd September 2015

A gutsy performance this evening saw United progress into the Scottish League Cup Quarter Final, a 3-1 extra-time victory placing United's name into the hat for the draw. By Joe James Only three changes were made to the side that drew with Inverness at the weekend; in came Charlie Telfer and John Rankin, whilst fullback Jamie Robson was handed his first start for the Club. In the opening stages of the match, the Pars undoubtedly had the brighter start, in-form striker Faissal El Bakhtaoui and Michael Paton creating two early opportunities at goal. As the first half continued, Dunfermline's pressure increased and at 12 minutes they opened the scoring when Michael Paton's strike slipped through the grasp of Zwick. As the first half continued, United began truly showing what they were capable of, Callum Morris heading home an equaliser fifteen minutes before half time. Into the second half, it was United that looked the more likely team to score, Blair Spittal, Simon Murray and Billy McKay passing up reasonable chances throughout the final twenty minutes. Despite a handful of late chances to put the game to bed in normal time, the tie went into extra time. United started the extra-time period brilliantly, six minutes into the first period, Scott Fraser scoring the long awaited goal, skipping by the Dunfermline defence before converting to the side of the Dunfermline keeper Murdoch. Only three minutes after Fraser's well worked goal, substitute Blair Spittal was able to add an equally brilliant third, clinically dispatching a shot following a wonderful solo run.
