Bonjour Demel!

23rd November 2015

Dundee United have signed, subject to international clearance, experienced defensive midfielder Guy Demel until the end of the season. The French born player becomes Mixu Paatelainen’s second signing as he designs a squad capable of securing movement up the Ladbrokes Premiership. Guy, 6’ 1” and 34 years old, was most recently with West Ham in the Barclays Premier League, playing 83 times for the Hammers over four years and lists Hamburger SV, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal amongst his previous clubs. Demel came through the ranks at Nimes Olympique before moving to Arsenal and subsequently enjoying success during a four-year spell with Borussia Dortmund. The powerful player established himself in the Ivory Coast national side during six seasons with Hamburger SV, where he played alongside the likes of Rafael van der Vaart and former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. He has also represented Cote d’Ivoire on 35 occasions, played in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006 and 2008 and was included for both the 2006 and 2010 World Cup finals. After helping Ivory Coast to qualify for the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Guy retired from international football in 2012 to concentrate on club football. Speaking to arabzone.co.uk about today’s signing, Head Coach Mixu Paatelainen said: “Guy comes with a lot experience and fantastic pedigree. He can add a lot to our squad. He is a powerful player but above all a good footballer. He will be a strong character in our dressing room and I am delighted to start working with him.” Custodian of squad number 55, Guy Demel said: “Once I spoke to the Head Coach, I was excited by the challenge of Dundee United and the role he has planned for me. I want to identify myself with the Club. I have many years of experience in football and if I can use my knowledge to help the younger players here that is what I will do. I have been training hard and I can’t wait to play for Dundee United. I am ready as soon as the Head Coach needs me.” The Terrors take on Hamilton this Saturday at Tannadice and Demel expects to be part of the match day squad.
