YOUTH CUP QUARTER FINAL: DUNDEE UNITED 3 AYR UNITED 0

31st January 2016

The Young Terrors advanced to the semi final of the Youth Cup at Tannadice this afternoon defeating Ayr United 3-0. By Peter Rundo The first half produced virtually nothing by way of goalmouth action, Ayr coming closest with United keeper Ryan Booth blocking a Ryan Wilson effort shortly before the interval. By contrast, the second half started with a flurry of activity and brought the breakthrough. Right from the restart, the visitors almost took the lead when Sean Mckenzie flicked on a long throw that was deflected just past the far post. But with three minutes gone, United went ahead when Ali Coote floated over a free kick which Aaron Duke powered in with a header at the back post. And with ten minutes played, the Tangerines doubled their lead. Again Coote was the provider, his slide-rule pass finding Brad Smith in space and, whilst his low grounder was well enough struck, it found the net after squirming under keeper Shaun Newman. Defiantly, Ayr almost pulled one back mid-way through the second half, Scott Allardice deflecting Wilson’s shot on the turn fractionally over. However, victory was sealed ten minutes from the end when Reghan Tumilty side-footed home Justin Johnson’s cut-back after the winger’s terrific run to the bye-line. Dundee United: Booth, Spark, Robson, Allardice, Ballantyne , Sukar, Tumilty, B Smith, Duke (Garden 65), Coote, Johnson (M Smith 82). Subs not used: Donaldson, McNaughton, Davie.
