First Team

Match Preview

11th March 2016

The string of important matches continues for United and tonight Paatelainen's side travels to Fir Park to face Mark McGhee's Motherwell. By Joe James Motherwell, although not competing at the top end of the league as they were doing only a few years ago, have had a relatively good season thus far - are currently occupying seventh spot on the Ladbrokes Premiership table whilst sitting only four points behind Ross County who currently hold fourth spot. Last weekend's Scottish Cup Quarter-Final victory was without doubt one of the few fantastic moments this season. Progressing into the semi finals of another major competition and the manner in which we did it should, fingers crossed, breed confidence in the side for the rest of the season and for our trip to Lanarkshire tonight. As if United's current position wasn't enough motivation for the team to go out and fight for another valuable three points, Paatelainen, the squad and all the supporters will be looking to get revenge from the bitterly disappointing 3-0 defeat in the last meeting between the sides in February, a defeat that saw United slip 13 points adrift at the foot of the table. If United are to come away with the win on Friday night, they'll have to do so without Eiji Kawashima again, the keeper missing out this week and last weekend's win in Dingwall with a thigh strain. Paul Paton and Gavin Gunning however are in contention to play, injury forcing the former to limp off midway through the Quarter Final. Both Guy Demel and Callum Morris remain sidelined with hamstring and knee problems respectively. Other than the aforementioned defeat at Tannadice last month, the sides have only met on one other occasion, early in the season in August, an own goal from Louis Laing and a last minute Simon Murray strike handing United all three points in an impressive performance at Fir Park. With eleventh placed Kilmarnock's tough schedule over the next few weeks - facing both Aberdeen and Celtic - a win could see United move within five points of Lee Clark's men and take another big step in our attempt to stay in the Scottish Premiership next season. Come on United!!
