Match Preview

15th April 2016

United face Hibernian in the William Hill #ScottishCup Semi Final tomorrow, a game that once again sees the Club handed an opportunity to compete in a national final. By Joe James Thankfully, it is often said that form goes out the window in cup matches. Whilst United go into the semi final off the back of last Saturday’s hugely disappointing defeat at home to Inverness, Paatelainen’s side can certainly take encouragement from their recent first-half display at Firhill - had the finishing been better, United could, and really perhaps should have been at least 3-0 in front at the break. Hibernian, for their part, are in the midst of a slump recording only one win in their last eight league matches, their latest exploit seeing them throw away a 2-0 lead against ten men with only six minutes remaining. They will however certainly be no pushovers, having so much strength and depth in all areas of the pitch, not least Jason Cummings, who is a proven goalscorer, and John McGinn, who has shown on many occasions against United that he has the ability to boss the midfield. Despite media reports earlier this week suggesting otherwise, midfielder Paul Paton has declared himself fit for the trip to Hampden, and keeper Luis Zwick has recovered from his leg injury. The only first team player missing out is the suspended Mark Durnan. Thus far, it’s been a very difficult season, there is no hiding from that. However, with United’s long-loving history with this tournament, think of what a semi final win could do for the confidence in United’s bid for Premiership survival and the possibility of having United’s name once again etched upon the side of the famous old trophy!!
