On Saturday, United travel to Ayrshire to face Kilmarnock in what is the final game of a hugely disappointing season. Although United travel to Rugby Park with relegation already confirmed, the trip gives us the opportunity to watch just some of the players we’ll be hoping can make an impact for us in the Championship next season. By Joe James On Tuesday, with five minutes remaining and 3-1 down, United showed real character in getting back into the game: first, a clinical Eddie Ofere strike ignited the come-back, whilst Justin Johnson’s fine solo goal gave United the merited point share with Thistle. In the past few weeks, Killie have made a habit of recording a well-deserved victory one weekend, to only follow it up with a defeat. The Ayrshire side's last match was in mid-week at our neighbours Dundee, a 1-1 draw seeing defender Conrad Balatoni score a second-half goal after Rory Loy’s 18th minute strike. United and Killie haven’t met since January in a game which looked as if United’s challenge to beat the relegation drop was up-and-running - Blair Spittal, John Rankin, Mark Durnan and Sean Dillon all scoring in a simply breath taking 5-1 victory at Tannadice. The sides have met on two other occasions throughout the season, in a 1-1 draw at Rugby Park in early December following a defeat in September when Kevin McHattie’s late strike sealed all three points for Kilmarnock. United will have a near-enough full strength squad to pick from and  the very encouraging performance of Matty Smith, Harry Souttar, Justin Johnson and Brad Smith against Thistle suggests that a similarly young side is likely to be fielded at Rugby Park. It will be good seeing the promising United youngsters being given an opportunity whilst also saying goodbye to some players who have over the years given their all for the United jersey.
