JIM MCINTYRE SIGNS FOR UNITED

3rd July 2001

United today made their first signing of the close season when the former Reading, Kilmarnock and Airdrie striker Jim McIntyre completed talks with boss Alex Smith at Tannadice and agreed a three-year deal.

"I am absolutely delighted to get Jim," commented Smith. "I have known him for a long time both as a young player at Airdrie where he was a prolific scorer and as a striker with Kilmarnock. He is excellent in the air, quick, a good finisher on the ground and two footed. At twenty-eight he offers us an important addition to the strike force because as well as being very good in front of goal he can also play as an offensive midfield player."

"It was important for us to bolster our forward line and having Jim, Derek Lilley, Steven Thompson, Jim Hamilton and youngsters Stephen McConalogue and David Winters gives me options we'll likely need with so many weeks coming up where we'll be playing Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday."

"I'm really looking forward to Jim joining up with the likes of Charlie Miller and Lilley in an attacking role and getting on the end of crosses from Jim Paterson and Craig Easton."

Jim McIntyre was equally pleased with the move. "I'm delighted to be coming to an ambitious club like Dundee United," he said. "I had a number of options open to me to stay in England and play my football at a high level. When I weighed everything up, however, the most impressive set-up was at Tannadice."

"If I am being honest as soon as I heard United were interested I knew in my heart that is where I wanted to go. I'm delighted to be coming back to Scotland and can't wait to join up with the rest of the lads for pre-season training on Thursday."
