COPA AMERICA CONFUSION FOR DEVOS

6th July 2001

United are awaiting a response from the Canadian FA over the immediate future of Tannadice defender Jason de Vos who returned from international duty with the Maple Leaf squad earlier this week following the decision to cancel the Copa America tournament in Columbia.

The kidnapping of a top official caused the organisers to re-date the event for next year - but that was overturned in South America yesterday when the programme was reinstated to the original plan, starting next week!

Needless to say, both Jason and the club were stunned at a political decision which has clearly been made with the financial jackpot on offer from blanket coverage of the competition by worldwide television. United manager Alex Smith reckons that a recall for de Vos would be unfair to the player. He said, "He rejoined our pre-season preparations only on Thursday, but has since gone through four really tough sessions. "It is my view that having had a month's break, Jason is far from being fit for games right now."

Needless to say, the player himself was taken aback by the decision in South America and awaits the decision of the Canadian FA with rapt attention.
