United 3 Peterhead 2

3rd September 2016

United grind out a win at Tannadice this afternoon taking them into the next round of the IRN-BRU Cup. By Tommy McKay After a start which was as bright as their shirts, United were pegged back to draw 2-2 with Peterhead at Tannadice which forced the game into extra time. However, United proved to be too strong for the visitors with the game finishing 3-2. United took the lead in the 1st minute through a powerful 20 yard drive.  Peterhead drew level on 29 with the prolific McAllister steering the ball past Zwick from 18 yards. In 35 minutes Nick van der Velden struck a clinic shot into the bottom corner however United relinquished the lead 60 seconds later.  Again it was the Peterhead talisman with the finish, this time a powerful header after good work and cross from McIntosh. United had near constant possession in the second half and Peterhead were saved by the cross bar on three separate occasions but McKinnon’s men could not make the break through their pressure deserved. v Peterhead (H) 3.9.16 Into extra time and with both teams having put so much into the second half the tanks were nearing empty however the half burst into life in the 103rd minute.  Van der Velden sent a lovely ball down to Dixon who powered into the box and was brought down however referee Nick Walsh had deemed the challenge legal and pointed to the corner flag and not the spot.  With the final touch of the half van der Velden had a shot from close range smothered by Hobday in the Peterhead goal. Into the second half of extra time and Peterhead finally succumbed to the pressure placed on them by United.  With three minutes of the game remaining Spittal's cross from the right found debutant Tony Andreu who nodded the ball into the net from close range.
