GOOD START BY BRIAN CARRIGAN

2nd July 2001

Manager Alex Smith has given the thumbs-up to on-trial striker Brian Carrigan's initial reaction to the opportunity on offer to him at Tannadice.

The youngster left Stockport County and has been handed a lifeline by his former Clyde boss. First reactions to the 21-year-old's involvement in United's pre-season preparations have been favourable as far as Alex Smith is concerned.

He said, "We made Brian no promises. He knows what is expected of him if he hopes to earn a contract with the Club. It is entirely up to Brian where his future lies. I am offering him the chance to earn himself a contract at Tannadice."

"We will see how much he wants to stay in the game during his spell as our guest at training. The plan is that he completes the full build-up to the new campaign - then we will take it from there".

Carrigan, 21, earned his move to Stockport by scoring 18 goals in 31 starts during Clyde's successful promotion push into last season's First Division.
