A dramatic late penalty gave United all three points after Dunfermline had fought their way back into the game.
The Pars found themselves two goals behind after Jim McIntyre and Derek Lilley netted for United before the break but Jimmy Calderwood's men closed the gap when Scott Thomson converted from the spot then scored from a free-kick.
The visitors looked like grabbing a share of the points, only for Jim Hamilton, star man throughout, to fire home the winner from the penalty spot with nine minutes remaining.
