CONFIDENCE IN THE SQUAD

6th September 2001

United boss Alex Smith will not make wholesale changes for the Club's first-ever trip to Almondvale Stadium.

Despite the 2-0 home defeat by Kilmarnock at Tannadice a fortnight ago the Tangerines' manager is preparing to stand by the majority of the side who until last Sunday had continued to demonstrate the good form shown in the second half of last season.

"Kilmarnock was disappointing, but it was only one game and I won't be making sweeping changes," said Smith. "I'll probably make one or two - that's all - and the players who were doing well before will have the chance to get winning again."

Whilst acknowledging the start made by the West Lothian new boys Smith is still confident his side can emerge victorious from Saturday's SPL fixture. "They have made a robust start to the season and have defended well in particular," said Smith. "But, like every game, this is one where we see a good chance of taking the points."

"To do that, we will have to concentrate and get back to the kind of work we were doing before the Kilmarnock match."

Jim Paterson could return to the United side after having to pull out of the Scotland Under-21 squad because of a throat infection. Recent signings Stephen Carson and Ronnie O'Brien could also feature from the start but midfielder Jamie Fullarton will be missing form the next couple of weeks due to a recurring groin injury.
