BROADWOOD BULLETIN

8th October 2001

Today at Tannadice United manager Alex Smith, in his role as Scotland Under-21 coach, looked back on a very satisfactory performance last Friday by the country's most promising youngsters against their Latvian equivalents.

"I was delighted by the display at Broadwood and we now have a crop of youngsters who can play as a team for some time to come which is encouraging."

One of the 'crop' is David McCracken and he drew praise from his club manager. "I thought David came through his debut at that level with flying colours," concluded Alex. "I think he was a bit shocked to be selected but he acquitted himself very well. He was selected on merit. It's my decision but the Dundee United connection isn't an advantage to David, Jamie McCunnie or anyone else. There's no preferential treatment, if anything, it's the opposite. I simply consider if they are good enough and if they will fit the bill. If they do, they're in."

Alex continues to enjoy his Scotland responsibilities. "I think my involvement is good for the club. It's good for me too and I would like to continue in the role for as long as possible although of course it is not my decision."
