FORFARSHIRE OPPORTUNITIES

11th October 2001

Coach John Blackley talked this morning at Tannadice about the benefits of local competitions such as the Forfarshire Cup.

"The Forfarshire Cup is strictly speaking a first-team competition but this season it has proved very convenient in meeting our Under-21 team needs," explained John. "The SPL Under-21 League this season not only includes all twelve SPL clubs but St. Mirren are also playing. This means of course we have thirteen Under-21 teams and one club has to sit out proceedings each Monday night. It was United's turn on 1 October 2001 and the Forfarshire Cup match against Brechin was perfect in plugging the gap."

"Playing in 'the Forfarshire' is a great opportunity for us anyway. It's a good work-out for everyone and a learning experience for some of our younger lads who come up against opponents who may be more physical and usually more experienced than they are used to in the Under-21 League."

The disruption to the 'Monday Night is Football Night' routine was worsened recently when the Under-21 home match against Dundee the previous Monday was postponed. "That now looks as if it will go ahead in December. We have two blank Mondays at present but the date has still to be agreed."
