"The boards of Dundee Football Club and Dundee United Football Club are pleased that the Scottish Football Association's Executive Committee has invited them to progress proposals for a shared stadium in the city.
Both clubs, along with Scottish Enterprise Tayside and Dundee City Council, look forward to developing this exciting project together.
This decision by the SFA is an important step forward for the proposal, but we would stress that matters are still at a very early stage, not least because UEFA still have to take a decision on which country will host the European Championships in 2008.
But those involved in the City of Dundee's bid believe that the City of Discovery must be involved if the SFA's efforts to bring Euro 2008 to Scotland are successful.
The boards of Dundee FC and Dundee United FC believe that sharing a home stadium in the city would not present any major problems to either club and indeed could be of benefit. But any steps towards a joint stadium will only be taken if they are in the best interests of both clubs and their supporters.
It is important that any rumours that a joint stadium would be a pre-cursor amalgamation are quashed. It is not. Neither Dundee FC nor Dundee United FC have any interest in a merger. Both have their own distinct and separate identities of which they are extremely proud.
Given the SFA's announcement today, both clubs will request a meeting with fellow SPL clubs in the near future to discuss this issue of ground sharing and seek a vote on the matter.
