TOMMO COMES OF AGE

4th October 2001

It could be argued that by scoring that vital 90th minute winner against Hearts at the weekend, that United front man Steven Thompson in a way came of age in his footballing career.

The reason for this is that in scoring the goal that netted the Tangerines three vital points, Tommo had to outjump former United and Scotland centre-back Steven Pressley.

United's Steven takes up the story. "When "Elvis" played at Tannadice, as a young player it was my duty to look after his kit. With me scoring the winner in such a fashion, I feel I have squared the circle as it were. Steven was great about it and came up at the end and shook my hand."

Steven is hoping for an extended run in the first eleven. "I'm feeling good at the moment and my first minute goal against Dumbarton followed by my header at Tynecastle has boosted my confidence. Obviously I'd like to get a run in the team and, if selected, I'm ready for the St Johnstone match next Tuesday."
