UNITED Under 21's 2 MOTHERWELL Under 21's 1

19th November 2001

The United Under 21 team's aim was to put a fourth consecutive win on the board and by half-time, they certainly looked to be well on course to achieving their aim.

With nineteen year old Paul Jarvie in goal replacing Alan Combe who had taken ill, the young Tangerines were well in control for most of the first 45 minutes but had to wait until the 22nd minute before STEPHEN McCONALOGUE (pictured above left), got onto the end of a Carson free kick to head the ball into the Motherwell net past Connolly to put United 1-0 ahead.

Within six minutes of the first goal, Stuart Duff put through Ronnie O'Brien who hit the ball towards the Motherwell goal and the advancing JIM PATERSON then proceded to strike it into the net for United's second. Before half-time Carson connected with a Paterson cross but his effort went just over the bar.

The second half was more even than the first and although United started strongly with efforts from McConalogue and O'Brien, it was Motherwell who scored in the 70th minute. Ramsay was brought down by Cocozza and he scored from the spot.

There was no further scoring and United ran out 2-1 winners. McConalogue proved a constant threat up front, O'Brien played very well covering a lot of ground while McCracken was solid at the back. In the last five matches, United have now taken 13 points from a possible 15.
