UNDER-18'S DEFEAT HIBS

8th November 2001

In difficult windy conditions, Dundee United's Under-18 team defeated their counterparts from Easter Road this afternoon. Played at North End Park with a 2pm kick-off, the young United side created few opportunities in the first half. Assistant Manager John Blackley assessed the performance. "We tried to play a passing game but the prevailing conditions made this difficult and although were sound defensively, we didn't do that much up front although the two forwards held up the ball well and tried to link it. The midfield could have got forward a bit more however."

Although the conditions were in favour of visitors Hibernian in the second half, it was United who went in front after 52 minutes through Stephen McGowan (pictured above left). "It was a first class goal scored by a young player who was a thorn in the side of the visitors all day," explained John.

It was a defensive error that led to Hibs' equaliser with just fifteen minutes remaining however Aaron Conway, who had come on as a substitute, scored with three minutes remaining to give United all three points. The move came about following excellent play by Stephen McGowan who set Aaron up to score the winner.

The United Under-18's have made a steady start to the 2001/02 campaign having taken 20 points from 12 matches, a run that has included five wins and five draws.
