STEF RESCUES A POINT FOR UNITED

24th November 2001

DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC 1 UNITED 1
Not since the great run that Tommy McLean's United put together in season 1996-1997 had United won at East End Park. It was in January 1997 to be exact and the Tangerines had just completed the signing of Jamie Dolan from Motherwell.

The team of Sieb, Pederson, Zetterlund and Olofsson has completely gone and today Alex Smith's team of Gallacher, McCunnie, Lauchlan, Hamilton and Griffin turned up at Dunfermline determined to hold on to their recently acquired fifth position.

Keen to avenge a 0-2 defeat just a fortnight ago at Tannadice by the same opponents today, United set about the Pars right from the kick-off and came close more than once in the early stages of the match. After the first twenty minutes the home side began to come back into the game and were the better side in the last twenty minutes of the half.

Dunfermline maintained that supremacy as the second period unfolded and Petrie, the man who did the damage at Tannadice, hurt United yet again in the seventieth minute when he opened the scoring.

Jimmy Calderwood immediately substituted Petrie with McGroarty and although United pressed for the equaliser, it was Dunfermline who came closest to scoring again when Bullen was clean through, waved on despite the offside protests of the visitors. He appeared to be caught in two minds between chipping Gallacher and shooting and in the event, did neither, allowing Gallacher to save.

It was young Stef McConalogue (pictured above left) who rescued a well-deserved point for United with a strike from 16 yards with under five minutes left.

In fact Stef almost won the match however Ruitenbeek saved this time around. Jimmy Calderwood admitted after the match that a draw was the correct result and the point was enough to maintain United's fifth position in the SPL.

UNITED: Gallacher, Hannah, Lauchlan, Easton, Miller, Fullarton, McCunnie, Aljofree, Griffin (c), Hamilton, Thompson
