UNITED 0 DUNFERMLINE 2

10th November 2001

Not since April 1996 had United lost at Tannadice to Dunfermline. On that occasion, it was a First Division match and the winner was scored by Stewart Petrie.

That same player opened the scoring for the East End Park side today after 12 minutes with a scorching drive past Gallacher. Dunfermline went close through Thomson and then Nicholson before United came back into the game and almost equalised first through McIntyre and then a Hamilton volley. Half time came with the Tangerines 0-1 down.

United pushed forward in the second period and came close on a couple of occasions with Miller bringing out an excellent stop from Ruitenbeek. Disaster hit United when an uncharacteristic short back pass in the 63rd minute by captain Danny Griffin(above left) let Stevie Crawford through and the quality of the Dunfermline striker could be seen in the way he chipped the onrushing Gallacher to put United 0-2 behind. The match was now beyond United and despite a reasonable penalty claim when substitute Jim Paterson was sandwiched down in the penalty box, the Tangerines lost the match and slipped to 8th in the SPL.
