ALEX SMITH’S REFLECTS ON VICTORY OVER SAINTS

19th November 2001

As his United team moved up to fifth top of the SPL, Team Manager Alex Smith reflected on a positive result for his side. “The three points have enabled us to climb into the top six and I am delighted with that. Now we must work hard to maintain that position. Saturday’s match was a typical derby game with loads of effort, commitment and certainly not a little skill.” Alex thought that his team produced four moments in particular that he felt could be termed magnificent. “Danny Griffin’s free kick that came off the underside of the bar, David Hannah’s header off a post, Hasney Aljofree’s spectacular overhead kick which resulted in United’s opener and Jim Hamilton’s diving header that sealed a Tangerine victory.” The United gaffer reserved judgement on the red card incident involving Hamilton. “I felt that it was unfortunate that Hammy was red carded. There seemed to be little in the incident but the far sided Assistant Referee appeared to see something. We will look at the video footage to clarify the position as whether to appeal or fine the player.”
