United have struggled in recent years to defeat Kilmarnock either home or away and in fact haven't scored against the Ayrshire side in five matches. Killie had already beaten United 0-2 this season at Tannadice and this afternoon at Rugby Park, the Tangerines bad run continued.
Manager Alex Smith made four changes to the United team carrying out his promise to freshen up the team. Into the starting line-up came scorer of the crucial goal last week at East End Park, Stephen McConalogue. Joining him was Tassos Venetis, Jim Paterson (above left) who started the match having been on the bench in recent games and a debut was given to young Aberdonian Stuart Duff.
United went behind to an Alan Mahood goal in the 31st minute. Murray crossed,the United defence didn't clear the ball effectively and Mahood hit the clearance past Paul Gallacher. Within a minute Venetis almost equalised, his shot bringing out a good save from Marshall. McGowan almost extended Killie's lead from a free-kick with Gallacher saving well. Kilmarnock went in one up at half time, just about deserving their interval lead.
In 56 minutes, the Tangerines were dealt a bitter blow when Gary Hay put the home side further ahead, his shot being deflected past Gallacher by Jim Lauchlan. United threw on all three substitutes but it made little difference and Kilmarnock ran out comfortable and deserving winners.
