SMITH ENCOURAGED BY YOUNG TEAM

19th December 2001

United team boss was concentrating on team matters with a trip to Rangers looming ever closer on the horizon however he was still reflecting on Saturday's 1-1 draw and remained disappointed not to have taken full points from the visit of Aberdeen. "While there were many aspects of the match last weekend to be happy about, it was very disappointing not to take full points," commented Alex.

Clearly the manager was concerned with not just the Aberdeen result when it came to dropped points during this campaign. "We were in a position to win the match as we have been in two other matches in this campaign. We need to turn these results into wins. Nevertheless, we had some excellent performances. Danny Griffin had to adjust from midfield to centre back alongside Jim Lauchlan and played outstandingly well. Craig Easton was excellent and probably had one of his best games for the Club."

The continuing youthfulness of his team selections was very encouraging for Alex. "The average age of the team is around the 22/23 mark. The signs are beginning to appear positive for the future and the lads are looking forward to what is a another big test for them this weekend when we travel to Ibrox."
