MANAGER: "TEAM NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE"

3rd December 2001

Another match against Kilmarnock. Another defeat. Another match without scoring against the Ayrshire side. United's run against the Rugby Park side continued to worsen after a 0-2 SPL defeat at the weekend.

Manager Alex Smith reflected on the match and the lessons learned. "Saturday's game at Kilmarnock turned out to be another disappointing result and with it, we lost our top five position in the SPL. I felt that we started the game well enough and played a new system from which we created two or three chances early in the match but failed to capitalise on them. We then handed Killie the initiative when we lost a goal on the counter-attack at a time that we were pressing for the first goal."

Alex believes that this is not the first time this has happened. "On two or three occasions away from home, we have failed to defend properly whilst we were attacking. The need for complete and absolute concentration is more acute when your team is attacking. It is a lesson we have to learn and learn quick."

Never slow to get youth into the team on merit, the Manager was pleased with the performance of Stuart Duff. "One of the positive aspects to Saturday's match was the debut of Stuart Duff who has been turning in some very bright performances in the Under-21 team. He is a very exciting prospect for the future."

Alex then looked ahead. "The form of late has been disappointing to say the least and we require to get back to basics in order to start winning matches beginning with the visit of Livingston this coming Saturday."
