First Team

ALL THE INFO | RANGERS (H)

7th January 2023

Rangers are our first foot at Tannadice of 2023 as we pass the halfway point in the cinch Premiership this Sunday.

Opponent Lowdown

The Gers currently sit second in the table, nine points behind their title rivals from the other side of Glasgow.

After Giovanni van Bronckhorst's sacking during the FIFA World Cup break, former assistant manager Michael Beale made the return to Ibrox after the release clause in his Queen's Park Rangers contract was met.

Beale has made a respectable start to life as gaffer, boasting four wins and a draw from his first five games in charge. However, Kyogo Furuhashi's late strike in the second Glasgow derby of the season could have all but ended Rangers' title hopes just two days after the turn of the year as they dropped two valuable points in the hunt for Celtic at the summit.

Rangers' assault on the UEFA Champions League failed to hit the heights of last season's Europa League exploits, crashing out in the Group Stage as statistically the worst team in the competition's history with six defeats from as many games and a -20 goal difference to add insult to injury.

Academy graduate Jamie Robson's half-volley was the difference in our last win over the blue half of Glasgow back in August 2021, the perfect way to welcome back 4,500 United fans to the terraces following the COVID-19 pandemic crowd restrictions.

Fellow homegrown defender and boyhood Arab Ross Graham notched his first goal for the club in the last meeting between the sides at Tannadice, rising to meet a floated Dylan Levitt delivery on the half-hour mark to open the scoring.

In-form forward Glenn Middleton is the only player in the United squad to have represented both teams - the 23-year-old switched west for east in the summer transfer window as he moved to Tayside on a permanent deal.

Dave Narey has represented the Terrors most frequently against the Ibrox outfit, turning out 77 times in this fixture, whilst English forward Albert Juliussen leads the scoring charts with an impressive 13 between 1942-44.

Tannadice Talk

In-form shot-stopper Mark Birighitti spoke to the broadcast media ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash with Rangers, our first home match of 2023.

Birighitti, who has three clean sheets in his last five appearances for the Terrors, highlighted his determination within the squad to secure a positive result from Sunday's game.

“The team is full of confidence; we’ve had three really good results and we’ll be going into the game on Sunday full of confidence."

The prospect of heading into the match as underdogs doesn't faze the Australian, as he continued; “I strongly believe in this playing group. There is enough quality in this squad to beat any team on any given day".
