SMITH LOOKING FORWARD TO IBROX VISIT

22nd December 2001

United travel to Glasgow to play Rangers with memories of last season's crucial win in the south side of the city still in the mind of the Manager. "Its' always an exciting prospect going to Ibrox where normally there is a full house," commented Alex. "It is always a difficult place to win although on our last visit, we did manage to claim a victory there when the points were precious in our battle to avoid relegation. Since then we have again played them, this time at Tannadice and despite a 1-1 at half-time, we went on to lose 1-6. Needless to say, that second half was a disappointment. Today's match allows us the opportunity to make up for that disappointment."

The United gaffer was fulsome in his praise of his Rangers counterpart. "Rangers of course have just employed a new manager in Alex McLeish. His playing career was impeccable helping Aberdeen to win many trophies, not least the Cup Winners Cup while gaining 75 caps for Scotland. He has also performed extremely well in his first two managerial posts at Motherwell and Hibernian. So well in fact that Rangers felt he was the man for them. The fact that its' Alex's home debut as boss at Ibrox adds spice to the occasion."

The United Alex hopes his young side will perform to a high standard and learn from the experience. "We travel to Ibrox with a young and ambitious side. This will surely be a stiff test of their character. We will be without Hasney Aljofree (pictured) who was unfortunately concussed last weekend against Aberdeen and will not be able to play for a further two weeks. Against that, Charlie (Miller) has shrugged off a niggly back injury and may find a starting berth. Hopefully our young side can put up a good show and return to Tannadice with three points."
