SCOTLAND INTERNATIONAL DECLAN GALLAGHER BOLSTERS BACKLINE

26th July 2023

Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Scotland international Declan Gallagher, who joins the club from St Mirren on a two-year deal subject to SFA approval.

Gallagher began his career with Celtic, winning the Scottish Youth Cup as a 19-year-old, before making his first steps into senior football with Clyde.

A move to the other side of Tannadice Street followed, as he spent two seasons with Dundee. The defender played every league minute in the 2013/14 campaign as the Dens Park outfit clinched the Scottish Championship title.

Gallagher enjoyed back-to-back promotions with David Hopkin’s Livingston, also part of the Lions side which claimed the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2015.

Exemplary leadership qualities saw him claim the armband during a two-season stint with Motherwell, whilst Scotland boss Steve Clarke rewarded Gallagher with his first involvement with the national team set-up thanks to his form in claret and amber.

He was selected to start in Belgrade for Scotland’s crucial Euro 2020 Play-Off Final against Serbia, and after emerging victorious, Gallagher clinched a place in the squad for the finals of the tournament.

Since departing Fir Park, our new number 31 worked with Jim Goodwin at Aberdeen throughout the latter part of the 2021/22 campaign, and helped St Mirren achieve their first top-six finish since the introduction of the split - a stalwart for the Buddies last season as he made 34 appearances in all competitions.

'Great Coup'

After securing the services of the 32-year-old for the upcoming two seasons, Goodwin commented: "The right side of our defence was a position that we felt we needed to strengthen and when we heard about Declan's availability, it was a no-brainer.

"He's a very experienced defender who has played the majority of his career in the top flight and was involved with the national team recently so it's a great coup for the club."
