MANAGER LOOKING FOR ENTERTAINING GAME AND WIN

19th January 2002

United Manager Alex Smith believes his players need little motivation for this afternoon's SPL derby clash with Dundee at Tannadice Park. "Everyone at Tannadice has been looking forward to this match all week. It is an ideal game for us following last weekends disappointing performance. It is extremely important to win a derby match for our superb supporters but it is also very important that we return to winning ways, take three points and make a move towards the top six."

Alex believes that the football on show this afternoon should be of a good quality. "Dundee can boast some impressive footballers but so can we with Charlie Miller, Jim Lauchlan, Jim McIntyre and Derek Lilley among them. It will be interesting to compare the contrasting styles with Dundee playing in a very continental fashion while we play in a very British way and this should add to the flavour of the game. In a sad week where there have been many redundancies in the city area it is important that we should serve up a thrilling and entertaining match. Football has always been a game with close ties to the industrial workforce and perhaps today we can lift the spirits of some of those who received unfortunate news."

Club catain Danny Griffin will undergo a late fitness test and has a 50-50 chance of playing this afternoon.
