ALEX PRAISES UNITED SUPPORT

21st January 2002

Alex Smith was clearly very pleased at the weekend, not only with the fact that his side have now won three out of their last four matches but also with the manner of the performance at the weekend. "It was very pleasing to come out of Saturday's derby with full points in what, to me, was a very exciting game. Credit goes to both teams in what was a great advert for the city and for Scottish football. All three derby matches this season have been first class entertainment. It was an excellent team performance with exceptional play from Stephen Wright, Jamie Fullarton, Jim Lauchlan, Charlie Miller, Jim McIntyre and Derek Lilley who all inspired the younger players to perform admirably."

Alex looked ahead to tomorrow's match at McDiarmid Park. "We now have another derby match in front of us when we visit St Johnstone in Perth tomorrow evening. We will have to go into that match with the same attitude and commitment that we demonstrated against Dundee on Saturday. This will be another big challenge as the Saints are fighting for every point in the hope of surviving relegation from the SPL. We here at United know that feeling all too well as we were in a similar position last season and know how difficult it is to turn things around. Their predicament will make the St Johnstone players very determined and I know they are a far better team than their position suggests but we have our own priorities and that is to gain a further three points to move us closer to the top six. We are hopeful that captain Danny Griffin will be fit to take part."

The Manager was appreciative of the superb level of support from Tangerine fans. "I would like to thank our supporters not only for their fantastic support on Saturday but for their exemplary behaviour during the match. They were a credit to this Club."
