ALJOFREE DOUBLE SEES UNITED THROUGH TO NEXT ROUND

United went into this afternoon determined to go further than last season's Tennent's Scottish Cup semi-final berth against Celtic. The opposition from Forres Mechanics were the first Highland League opposition to visit Tannadice Park in the Cup in around fifty years.

With one and a half hours until the kick-off, freezing fog surrounded the stadium and both ends of the pitch were smothered in mist. The decision to proceed was justified when, by three o'clock, the mist had cleared and the scene was set for some knock out action. With St Johnstone's match at home to Aberdeen called off, some of the red army stopped off to watch the game on their way home north swelling the attendance to 5,904.
