ALEX HAPPY WITH FOURTH ROUND DRAW

7th January 2002

United Team Manager Alex Smith was able to look back at Saturday's Cup win with a degree of satisfaction, particularly as his team were given a home draw against lower league opposition in Round 4.

"Saturday's match versus Forres turned out to be a fairly enjoyable spectacle. Despite having most of the play and a big percentage of the chances from clever wing play by Carson and Paterson, it took two spectacular goals from Hasney Aljofree and one equally spectacular goal from Charlie to finally kill off the Can Cans. It has to be said that Forres gave a very good account of themselves, especially their keeper McRitchie, player/manager Gordon Connolly with his controlled play and Charlie Brown with his darting runs."

Alex reflected on the Fourth Round draw made just half an hour after the Tangerine's win. "Its nice to have won and been drawn at home in the next round against Hamilton or Raith Rovers although ties against lower leagues sides can be extra tricky encounters. Returning to the game at the weekend, it was encouraging to see another young player come off the assembly line and perform in a mature way. Mark Wilson has been knocking at the door for a few weeks now and he is one of the many talented young players at United. This has been the first time since Jamie McCunnie came into the team at the age of seventeen, that a player younger than him has made it into a first team match for United. We shall continue to promote our young players whenever they demonstrate potential for first team football. Cultivating our own young players has been a successful route for this club in the past and will continue to be so in the future.
