EASTON CLOSES IN ON NUMBER ONE POSITION

8th January 2002

On Saturday, Craig Easton (pictured in action against Forres) came within one appearance of the current number one, David Hannah, in the appearance league table of players currently on the books at Tannadice. Craig made his 175th appearance as a United first team player against Forres and with Hannah not featuring in the Scottish Cup match with the Highland League side, the 22 year old came within one match of the top spot.

His boss, Alex Smith is in no doubt as to the value of the Bellshill born midfielder. "One of the most notable features in United's recent displays has been the performances of Craig Easton." He has developed into one of the most forceful midfielders in the SPL and the fact that he is a product of our youth policy gives everyone at Tannadice enormous pride. It is amazing that Craig has made over 170 appearances yet is still only 22 years old. Not only this but he has a high number of Scotland Under 21 caps as well as a clutch of other national appearances at various levels. To say the least, the level of consistency shown by him is excellent. He represents the lifeblood of the Club. The pulse of the team."

The Manager went on to enthuse about Craig's goalscoring abilities. "He is a non-stop all-energy type of player who not only uses the ball accurately but is known to score important goals. His equaliser at McDiarmid Park springs to mind as does his most recent goal when we played Aberdeen at home. We are all confident that barring injury, Craig will eventually represent his country at full international level particularly if he continues with the progress shown in recent months."
