MATCH REPORT | A PROMOTION PARTY AT TANNADICE

United Manager Alex Smith remains confident that United have a good chance of making the top six this campaign in the SPL despite a difficult run in towards the split. United have five matches to play and find themselves locked in a mid-table battle with arguably six clubs including the Tangerines chasing after two slots. It looks likely that Livingston and Saturday's opponents Aberdeen will join the Old Firm in this season's top six, however, only seven points separate the middle half dozen clutch of clubs.
"You can sometimes do better when the odds are not entirely in your favour," stated Alex. "We travel to Pittodrie on Saturday and have done well up there over the years and in fact I felt we deserved much more when we visited them earlier in the season. We also have to travel to Tynecastle where we have already taken full points in this campaign and Hibernian are to visit Tannadice in March and to date we have taken six points from two SPL matches against them. With Celtic away and Rangers at home, there is no denying it is a difficult run in but our battling display at Almondvale last weekend demonstrated the determination in our team to get results."
The United gaffer felt last night's draw at Dens Park between Dundee and Dunfermline was possibly the best result for United in terms of the Tangerines' battle for a top six berth. "If either team had picked up three points, it would have made it more difficult for us; however, we have now played the same amount of matches as the East End Park side and are only one point behind them and although Dundee have a game in hand over us, we still have a one-point lead over them."
United's match with Aberdeen kicks off at 3.00pm on Saturday.
