Despite being second best to Livingston for most of the match, United nearly departed Almondvale with all three points when Thompson (pictured) made a good run on the left, cut inside and passed the ball into the path of Derek Lilley. The striker had only the keeper to beat but contrived to miss the ball completely and the opportunity to come away with a win was gone.
With quarter of an hour remaining on the clock and 0-1 behind, the lively United support would probably have gladly taken a point at that stage. Behind to a looping David Bingham header, United had been toiling against Livi with David Fernandez in particular outstanding for the home side.
David Winters hit a quality strike just on half time that came back off the bar and that had been the nearest to a United goal in the first period. The introduction of Lilley with just under half an hour to go changed the flow of play as the United front man led the line well and it was Del who got the visitors back into the match with an excellent goal. Aljofree released the ball down the left and Thompson made a superb run to get onto the pass and crossed for Lilley who scored with a fantastic header over Culkin and into the net.
This was a welcome point for the Tangerines although the difficult run in will make top six qualification no easy task. Jim Leishman's side showed why they are doing so well and they are becoming increasingly likely to finish third in their debut season in the top flight.
