ALEX SMITH-WE MUST TIGHTEN UP OUR GAME

26th February 2002

United Manager Alex Smith reflected back on the 2-2 draw in the Tennent's Scottish Cup Quarter Final versus Ayr United on Saturday in a determined mood. "It is disappointing to go into lead twice at home against a team from a lower league and, in the end, be left with the difficult task of an away tie at Somerset Park. We did well for starters with an excellent effort from young Winters, but conceded within two minutes, which is simply inexcusable. Easton's goal fifteen minutes later did not settle matters either as, again, we slipped up later in the match. We urgently have to tighten up our game and regain the determination and concentration we so often have demonstrated that we are capable of. During recent weeks, our use of the ball has left a lot to be desired and this will have to be addressed in training.

On the question of confidence, the Manager conceded: "We are a predominantly youthful side and it is natural that our poor performance at Pittodrie last weekend should have affected the players. The task now is to rebuild our self-belief, individually and collectively." And, as Smith emphasised, "despite the disappointment, there are positive points to be taken from Saturday's match, foremost the brilliant performance of Davie Winters who looks as if he may become an important member of the first team next season. He has great pace, tremendous skill and has shown that he is a great finisher as well as having a good temprement."

"I was also pleased to see Charlie Miller coming back from suspension and to watch him perform to the standard that he managed to achieve in most games last season. Over recent weeks, we have encouraged him to play further upfield, and there is no doubt in my mind that he is far more effective in the final area of the field."
