LONG-TERM ALEX

30th August 2000

Alex Smith has taken charge at Tannadice on a long-term basis - this was made official by both parties today. The man who took over the managerial reins from Paul Sturrock earlier this month assumed the title of 'interim Manager' at the time. Now that has been changed to simply 'boss' of the Tangerines, a job he appears to be relishing as he bids to point United in the right direction.

The original title suited both parties, while Alex Smith decided on whether he could combine his duties at Tannadice with those in charge of Scotland's Under-21s. Club spokesman Niall Scott said, "We are delighted to confirm that Alex Smith has accepted the job of Manager on a permanent basis. He has put in a lot of work since arriving at the Club, and we have every confidence that he has the ability to get the team back to where it belongs in Scottish football".

Smith will continue to work without a contract, but United have made it clear that if he wants one, then negotiations on the matter will get underway immediately. Earlier this week, Alex Smith claimed that he was totally convinced of his ability to turn United's fortunes around.
