UNITED KEEP IT TIGHT BUT STILL LOSE

16th March 2002

United put together another sound defensive display this afternoon at Celtic Park keeping the attacking instincts of the home side at bay for most of the match. The exception was the only goal of the game when Petrov played a one-two with Larsson through the middle of the United defence and he slotted the Swede's return pass past Gallacher.

Stuart Duff retained his place in the side following the win at Hearts last week as the United gaffer elected to keep the same starting eleven that took the three points home from Gorgie Road. The Tangerine's struggled however to make any impression up front despite a brave stint by Charlie Miller. United's best first half effort came from Danny Griffin who hit an accurate free kick that had too little power in it to trouble Douglas. After the interval, United could have snatched a point right at the end when Miller almost connected with a ball across the face of the Celtic goal but the match was essentially one of Celtic attacking and United defending.

Having conceded nine goals in two SPL matches against the Parkhead side, Alex Smith will be pleased with his defence where Griffin played exceptionally well however there was little to excite the small Arab support among the usual huge home attendance.
