MATCH REPORT | A PROMOTION PARTY AT TANNADICE

United's build up to the 2002-2003 campaign continued today with an emphatic 5-1 result over First Division near neighbours Arbroath at Gayfield.
Manager Alex Smith fielded a much stronger starting eleven to the side he had put out against Brechin City in midweek with Paul Gallacher returning to goal behind a defence that included McCunnie, McGowne, Lauchlan and Duff. Mark Wilson started the match alongside Miller, Easton and Venetis in midfield while Thompson and McIntyre posed the goal threat.
United went a goal down in the first five minutes with Jamie McCunnie headering a Feroz cross into his own net. The Tangerines from then on dominated the majority of the match and the score could have been greater than five. Top scorer from last season Steven Thomson equalised on fifteen minutes before Jim McIntyre blasted United into the lead on the half hour mark.
2-1 up at half time, Tommo did the damage again with his second and United's third just after the restart when he took advantage of a slack defensive clearance to blast the visitors further ahead. The usual raft of substitutions that are a feature of these types of matches took place but it made no difference to United who netted a further two times in the final ten minutes, the first from Carson followed by a header from Jim Lauchlan.
It was an all together satisfactory performance from a purposeful United side who now play three matches in the coming week finishing a week today with the trip south to play Gary McAllister's Coventry City side.
